Open to Possibility

I’m outside again this morning. The birds are chirping and the sun is shining and the May tree smells absolutely glorious. I don’t think the weather will hold today and so, despite the chill in the air and my rapidly cooling coffee, I will be out here until it does.

In the haze of half sleep this morning, still nestled among the covers, I had a clear vision of a woman on a stage. Tall and dark-haired, she could have been me, or she could simply have been speaking to me…I couldn’t say, but she held the long skinny microphone in her hand and said:

Open to possibility.

The words tumbled into my mind and rang like a bell. Awakening something inside me.

Open to possibility.

In a lot of ways I’m not sure that I truly have been open, despite my professing to be so. That nagging voice of doubt, of fear, of scarcity always keeping me in the place of practicality, rationality, and not of true boundless possibility. And it occurred to me as I lay there that we truly do need to be open to possibility in order for anything to happen. In order for anything to change.

Because if you are not open to it, then you will block it.

Either consciously or subconsciously. You will either not recognize the possibility as a possibility at all, or you will see the possibility and then immediately see the 1000 reasons why it can never work (or, at least, can never work for you).

When you decide ahead of time that something is going to be hard, or draining, or too much work, or not effective, then you entirely close yourself off to the possibility that it will be easy, and effortless, and simple, and incredibly effective.

And in a lot of ways, that is what we all have been doing. Even those of us who think we’ve been open.

And so this is the work. The mindset work. The magic work.

Opening to possibility and then staying that way. And just that simple shift makes all the difference.

And how do you open? You decide.

It really is that simple. It may not necessarily be easy, but it is that simple. Each morning when you wake up, before you even open your eyes, you open to possibility. And then you practice staying open for as long as you can. Which, in the beginning, may not be very long at all. But you keep opening every morning anyway. And throughout your day, any time you remember, you open again. You shift. Over and over and over and over you keep opening and it won’t be long before the opportunities, the possibilities, begin to arrive.

They were already there, of course. You just couldn’t see them before. Before you opened to them they were invisible to you. Or at the very least, inaccessible.

And as the possibilities present themselves, staying open allows you to entertain them. To follow the thread. To ACT on the opportunities that the possibilities present.

And as the Universe, Source, whatever you wan to call it , sees you acting on possibility, well, one possibility leads into another and pretty soon your life looks nothing like it did a very short time ago and you look back and you are amazed.

And you look forward and see only possibility stretching forward as far as the eye can see and all the way beyond the horizon. And life becomes magical. And you become magical. And it truly is as simple as this.

Oh, you will try to complicate it along the way. Of course you will. You are human, after all.

But rest assured that if you only keep practicing, keep opening to the possible when you catch yourself being closed, keep acting and thinking and believing as if the possible is already here, already yours… It will be. And it likely won’t take nearly as long as you think it must. Because when you open to the possible, you bring it closer to you. You collapse time and it becomes your reality now.

So… what are you waiting for?
