We REALLY need to talk about this: good girl syndrome strikes again!
Here's the thing.
You do the work. You think you've gotten comfortable with taking up space and asking to have your needs met.
And then BAM!
You're laying in a hotel bed feeling anxious and hoping that your roomie will call the front desk to ask for a late checkout so that you don't have to.
Ya, true story. That was me last weekend.
It doesn't matter how much I KNOW about good girl syndrome and the insidious ways that it shows up in all sorts of places in our lives. I STILL have work to do on overcoming it.
Yes, even me. ESPECIALLY me.
Which is why I feel SO DAMN PASSIONATE about helping YOU overcome it as well.
Because I'm so aware of it so much of the time and can still be blindsided by how UNAWARE of it I can be.
There was absolutely NO REASON for me to be anxious about asking for something as simple as a late checkout. It's normal, it's expected, the person at the front desk would either say yes or no with little to no concern on their part. I mean, it's their JOB to answer the phone and do their best to help people. I can't actually imagine them being at all upset by the request.
But there I was, anxious that I might slightly discomfit someone, possibly. Or maybe I was anxious to ask for something that was not in the "rules" (it says in writing that checkout is 11 right). Or just anxious to ask for something that was purely a convenience and not a necessity. Whatever it was... it was definitely Good Girl Syndrome.
Can you see yourself in this story?
Wondering how we dismantle these reactions and feelings in ourselves?
Well, I do know how.
We do so with practice and SUPPORT.
Sometimes something as simple seeming as sharing your struggles with a group of compassionate supportive women can make a huge difference.
My absolute FAVOURITE part of the Wheel of the Year ceremonies that I host is the sharing that happens after the "real" ceremony is complete. The connections, the seeing each other and recognizing ourselves in each other. This is the real magic of women in circle.
At the retreat I attended last weekend (site of the aforementioned hotel room 😆) one of the participants said that women sitting in circle is where revolutions begin.
